The subject of portraiture powers my work. I strive to grasp, interpret, and articulate the intrinsic qualities that create the unique identities each of us possesses. Portraiture bears a special responsibility: to communicate identity, through expression or lack of expression, through shadow or light, through posture, scale, or medium, through representation or abstraction, or through process. Through a practice of additive and subtractive mark making, I explore both subtle and direct approaches to transmit each subject’s distinct physical and psychological characteristics as I have come to know and understand them.
